Comprehensive Exams for Healthy Eyes

Did you know that eye exams can also indicate signs of systemic health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes? A regular comprehensive eye exam checks far more than the sharpness of your vision. It also assesses your eye health for signs of eye conditions or disease, including symptoms of other health issues that can impact your eyes.

At Sun Valley Eye Care, your health is our primary focus. Our eye exams include extensive imaging and testing to assess your eye health, eye movements, and visual clarity. We want to help you see and feel as good as possible.

Protect your health today by booking your comprehensive eye exam with us.

When Do I Need an Eye Exam?

Routine eye exams allow us to monitor your eye health and catch potential problems early. The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends at least 1 exam every 2 years for adults 20–64 and annual exams for adults 65 and older.

However, everyone’s eyes are unique. Your optometrist will tailor your schedule based on existing medical conditions, contact lens wear, and current treatments or medications.

What to Expect During an Eye Exam

When you arrive at Sun Valley Eye Care, you’ll be greeted and checked in by our welcoming front desk team. We strive to keep appointments running on time, so you shouldn’t wait long before you’re called in for pretesting.

This part of the eye exam includes most of our eye care technology, such as OCT scans, retinal imaging, and eye pressure tests to assess your overall eye health. You’ll complete the pretesting with a technician and can ask them about any of the devices we use during your exam.

After the pretesting, you’ll meet with your optometrist. In addition to reviewing your scans, they’ll assess your vision and determine your prescription, if necessary, and do additional tests. We do binocular vision testing for all our patients to test how well their eyes work together.

During the exam, you’ll have time to ask questions and discuss your eyes and vision with your eye doctor. They’ll check for signs of dry eye and digital eye strain and make recommendations to improve your daily comfort. We want to make sure you understand how to care for your eyes and have comfortable, clear vision every day.

At the end of your exam, you’ll discuss eyewear and treatment options, if relevant. If you need to update your lenses or want to upgrade your style, your optometrist will introduce you to a member of our team who can help you select your new frames or book a contact lens fitting.

The Importance of a Comprehensive Eye Exam

Routine eye exams are essential to maintain good vision and detect potential problems. As we age, the risk of eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy increases. Many of these conditions can progress without noticeable symptoms and begin damaging your sight undetected without regular eye exams.

Regular eye exams allow us to monitor and track changes to your vision over time, to help us detect conditions early when they are often most treatable. Regular eye exams can also allow us to detect changes to your blood vessels inside your eyes that may indicate hypertension or diabetes, or changes to your vision that indicate neurological conditions such as strokes.

Good Eyesight Is More Than 20/20 Vision

Vision includes more than your visual acuity (how clearly you can see at different distances). It also includes how well your eyes work together and whether you have any irregularities or astigmatism that impact your vision. While wearing an up-to-date prescription can correct nearsightedness and farsightedness, regular lenses alone often don’t solve other vision problems.

Issues like binocular vision dysfunction, presbyopia, and astigmatism, for example, require specialized eyewear to prevent symptoms such as headaches, eye strain, dizziness, vertigo, or blurred vision. Custom-fit eyewear, such as prism lenses, multifocals, or toric lenses, can improve your visual comfort and clarity.
