Caring for Your Vision After Injury
Sun Valley Eye Care provides a primary vision assessment for patients with concussions or mild traumatic brain injuries (TBI). If you have experienced a head injury, you may notice visual symptoms such as dizziness, eye strain, or light sensitivity after your accident.
However, if your symptoms don’t resolve on their own, you may need additional support to get your eyes and brain working smoothly again, like they used to. Whether you require the information for insurance purposes or need to develop a treatment plan, improving your visual symptoms begins with a comprehensive primary vision assessment.

Independent Vision Assessment
For many insurance companies to cover the cost of vision therapy or other interventions post-concussion or brain injury, they require an independent, third-party assessment.
We conduct these third-party vision assessments to provide insurance with the necessary evidence to cover your treatment. For more information, contact us directly.

Common Persistent Vision Symptoms
While many people who experience a concussion recover within 2–4 weeks, others continue to experience some or all of their earlier symptoms. These are considered persistent concussion symptoms.
Patients with persistent concussion symptoms may notice vision symptoms that impact their day-to-day activities. Some of these symptoms include:
- Difficulty with visual focusing, especially changing focus from distant to near objects
- Difficulty tracking moving objects
- Feeling of “tunnel vision” or being less aware of peripheral (side) vision
- Difficulty with visual concentration, including reading
- Sensitivity to light and/or moving objects or people
- Feeling overstimulated or having worsened symptoms in busy or bright environments
If you have had a concussion or head injury and continue to experience symptoms like these, a vision assessment can check for persistent issues and recommend treatment options for your next steps.
Next Steps and Referrals
During your vision assessment, we can check how well your eyes are working together, how well they track objects, and how well they are processing information and sending it to your brain. This assessment gives us an indication of what is causing your symptoms and provides us with the information necessary to determine the next steps for your treatment.
The necessary interventions may include specialty glasses that improve eye alignment or reduce eye strain through light filters, vision therapists and rehabilitation specialists, vestibular therapy with a physiotherapist, or seeing a psychologist.
We’ll work with you to develop your next steps for effective treatment and can provide referrals to practitioners in each area of expertise. We’re well-connected within the vision therapy community and have a long history of working with practitioners from other disciplines to provide our patients with well-rounded, multi-disciplinary care. Some of our common vision therapy referrals are to Dr. Sabih Chaudhary and Dr. Palki Arora in Calgary, as well as Dr. Tedra Kindopp in Red Deer.
We understand the stress and frustration that can come with dealing with a concussion or mild brain injury. We’ll assist you through your assessment and on to your next steps, to make sure you have guidance and advice throughout the treatment process.
