Our Eye Care Practice in SE Calgary

Born and raised in southern Alberta, Dr. Ben Barrus attained a Bachelor of Science at the University of Alberta, and then studied optometry at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, graduating with honours in 2008. 

He has been fortunate to gain a wide range of valuable experience in eye care, from volunteering with a medical team performing eye surgeries in Zimbabwe and providing vision care in underprivileged areas in the Tongan islands, to working with a highly skilled team of medical professionals at the primary eye hospital in New Zealand. Returning home to Canada has given him the opportunity to put down roots in Calgary where he has been practicing for the last 9 years.

Dr. Barrus performs comprehensive eye exams and has a particular interest in pediatrics, dry eye, myopia control, binocular vision, specialty contact lens fitting, and surgical co-management. He enjoys the challenge of helping his patients solve their vision problems, and he works collaboratively with ophthalmologists and other health professionals to provide outstanding vision care to his patients. As of 2017, Dr. Barrus serves on the board of the Alberta Association of Optometrists.

Dr. Barrus enjoys spending time with his wife Jesse and his 3 lovely and energetic daughters. He enjoys being outdoors, camping in the mountains with his family, and cheering on New Zealand’s rugby team, the All Blacks.

Dr. Jenn Cooke was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, but has made southeast Calgary home for more than 20 years. She achieved her Bachelor of Science at the University of British Columbia and then graduated on the dean’s honour list from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry. 

During her schooling, she was fortunate enough to travel to Moldova to provide eye care and glasses to underprivileged communities. During her final year, she completed multiple internships, including a disease internship in Florida and a primary care internship working with Dr. Barrus himself. 

Dr. Cooke performs comprehensive eye exams. She is always up for the challenge of trying to solve her patients’ individual vision problems and works collaboratively with other health professionals to find a solution. She feels it is important to educate her patients with the knowledge they need to understand their eye conditions. 

In her free time, you can find Dr. Cooke spending time with her friends and family, baking, or going to her favourite spin/yoga class.
